DESCRIPTION: The London Plane is a very hardy large spreading tree that grows to a height of 20 metres. This tree has unusual bark of mottled greys and fawns that flakes off during Winter. It has large, thick, green leaves shaped similar to a Maple, changing to golds and browns in Autumn. Also of interest are the large bristly ‘seed balls’, usually produced in pairs in summer.

LANDSCAPE USES: Well used for street and park plantings and excellent as a shade tree. It is also often grown by farmers as it can be pollarded regularly for stock feed.

TOLERANCES: Tolerates air pollution, wind and coastal conditions and suitable to most soil types and climates. Roots are deep and can be invasive.

TREE CARE: Plant in a well drained and well worked soil. Take care to plant the bud union above the soil level. Water in well and keep soil moist until tree is established. Fertilize when planting and again after new growth appears. Prune tree when planting to encourage new growth.
